As part of our topic on Brazil, we have been learning more about the country: its landmarks, culture and customs. 1 in 5 people live in poverty. We imagined what life - away from the glory of the World Cup - would be like for these people, many of whom live in 'favelas' (shanty towns) or run-down blocks of flats.
Today we have launched our new enrichment topic...Brazil! We have been learning about Street Art with Leon from Seven Stars and had the opportunity to create our own graffiti pieces using spray paint. We also had a Samba lesson and got ourselves into the carnival spirit with dance coach Serena. What a fantastic day! We built our own raft this afternoon and tested it out this evening. What a result! Great teamwork guys! Wow, what a scorching day out and about on activity. This morning we were rock climbing up on the crags. Then, a sunny picnic lunch and off gorge climbing. A fantastic team effort saw us all clamber up 24 waterfalls. We cooled down on the way in some beautiful mountain pools and shower like waterfalls. Such a busy day for Arkless, so sorry for the lack of updates. Back in the land of wifi - so here goes. After a huge breakfast we tied canoes together to make catamarans to paddle across the lake. Then the big challenge.... We climbed a high ladder to balance on an 8m high platform then abseiled to the ground. All of the children had a try and took themselves well beyond their comfort zone. After a hectic time packing and tidying our rooms, we met for our final activity, which involved putting our map reading skills to the test with an orienteering challenge off site. What a team! Mission accomplished. Wow, what a fantastic day! First, we went rock climbing on the Zig Zags near the centre and conquered our fear of heights. Some very brave group members even scaled the crags blindfolded! Without teamwork and support, this would have been even more difficult. Our second activity was gorge walking in Boredale. Using our climbing skills, we scrambled up a waterfall then took a refreshing shower at the end! Our final activity of the day was tunnelling. In the darkness of the underground network, some were even brave enough to explore without headlamps! What an amazing week! We have tested ourselves to the limit - being taken out of our comfort zones, experiencing new challenges and overcoming our fears. We have learned how to work effectively as a team and about the importance of support and good communication. Myself, Miss Wootton and Mr Lockey are extremely proud of every single member of Year 6 for taking up these incredible challenges and giving it 110%. We would all like to say a HUGE thank you to our Howtown instructors Sara, Jon and Ellie, who have brought our learning alive, as well as to Phil, Paul, Rachel and the rest of the team for looking after us and making us feel at home. During the week, each group had to do a presentation at the morning meeting. Both Arkless and Dalton groups were amazing and were praised by staff and pupils from other visiting schools. Well done everyone!
