Monday 1st June began with us meeting Outward Bound leaders Jonathan and Heather. They had come into school to show us how we might survive being shipwrecked on a desert island.
Imagining our ship had crashed into the deserted beach, we began to look around for things to help us survive!
Once we had gathered everything we started work building a shelter using sticks and tarpaulin. Then we made a fire (well Jonathan made the fire) in a pit which would be used to cook fish, bread and to boil water.
The water had to be filtered to make it safe to drink. After that we made tripods using big branches to support the water-boiling pots.
Once cooked we tasted the bread and fish which was surprisingly good!. Heather made hot chocolate using the boiled water.
In the afternoon we made rafts out of old plastic barrels tied with rope and sails made with branches and tarpaulins.
We learned such a lot and our imaginations ran wild!!!
In Literacy we have covered different types of of writing linked to the topic 'Survival'
In Numeracy we have been learning about co-ordinates. We also got to use the 'BEEBOT' robots which we could program to travel around a deserted island.
In art we used water colours to paint an island scene then we cut out silhouettes of palm trees and animals which we stuck in the foreground. They turned out great.
Our Survival Fun day has been a great success. We have tried rock climbing, archery, laser-tag, golf, a ship-slide and a bouncy castle. Everyone had a try and did their very best!!
