Year 6 had fun playing rounders whilst the sun shone. A few people forgot some of the rules, however next time they will remember!
The children had a special unexpected treat when they were invited to share some time with the animal man! There were a few phobias conquered as the children held snakes!
Hello and welcome to the final term of the school year-Summer Term!
It's a very busy time for all of us in Yr6 as we prepare for our SATS and of course leaving primary school and moving up to Secondary! Last week the children did mock SATS and coped really well. Many thanks for all the hard work you put in with your children over the last half-term at home. Any additional revision can only help. We will be revising daily for the next 3 weeks but we will also have some fun in between. There's National Geographic work to do and work about Marie Curie to finish. Keep supporting your children, it really helps. Thank you, Miss Shield. . Hello and welcome back to our Yr 6 blog. We are busy revising for our SATS and everyone is working really hard. Booster classes are well attended too, so thank you for your support. This week is British Science Week and the whole school visited the Life Centre in Newcastle on Monday. It was a brilliant day filled with experiments, things to do and see and a fantastic show in the Planetarium! I'm sure each and every one of us came away having learned something new! Our work shop introduced us to DNA. We worked with scientists to extract DNA from a kiwi fruit. It was amazing! Continuing the theme, we have looked at the difference between acquired and inherited traits in humans and animals. We looked at the Labradoodle dog and how it's parents are different breeds. Which characteristics has the pup inherited? It's been a very productive week and there has been an excitement and buzz around school. Please take time to look at our gallery. Miss Shield & Mrs Craig. Year 6 have been celebrating filling their marble jar. They chose to have a slumber party theme meaning it was popcorn, crisps, and juice all around. While some pupils watched a film or played Times Table Rockstars, others worked with Mrs Coy to make slime. Well done year 6 on filling your jar and we hope you enjoyed your afternoon. This term, Year 6 are reading Letters from the Lighthouse by Emma Carroll. This dramatic novel is set during World War II. The detailed and vivid descriptions of an air raid provided by the author, as well as contemporary newsreel footage, have helped to inspire our writing in our English lessons. We cannot wait to read the pupils final Gold Write for this cycle of work. What we have read and watched has also inspired many of our class to talk to their relatives about their experiences of World War II. Niamh was kind enough to bring to school her Great-Grandfather's World War II medals.
The "sieve of who"? Our year 6 pupils asked the same question during our maths lesson on Friday. However, by the end of the lesson everyone of the class could tell you who he was. Eratosthenes was an astronomer and mathematician who worked at the library in Alexandria, Egypt in 250 B.C. As the class discovered, he found a pattern to work out prime numbers.
Using a hundred square and the simple trick of identifying numbers that are in different times tables, they were able to identify which numbers from 1-100 can only be divided by the number one and itself thus making them a prime number. Well done year 6. You took on a tricky investigation and solved it. Have you ever wanted to visit the Grand Canyon? Well our Year 6 class could be your tour guide. As part of our Geography topic, Year 6 have been learning all about the Grand Canyon: its flora and fauna, geology and even what you can do if you visited. Their hard-work over the last few weeks has culminated in them producing their own Trip Advisor style reviews and sand art to show the different geological make up of each strata. They have also worked in small groups to turn their reviews into green screen videos. They have shown their ability to work collaboratively and to master using new technologies to create their masterpieces.
What a fantastic way to end the Autumn term. Enjoy the holiday, have a rest and most importantly Merry Christmas. Miss Shield and Mrs Coy |
